Coding tests for campus hiring and lateral engineering roles

A coding assessment is a work sample with a clock. Pick languages, tests, and review rules that match campus volume or lateral depth — not a generic puzzle pack.

Coding tests fail when they measure contest speed instead of the job. They also fail when they are so open-ended that two reviewers cannot agree. The useful middle is a problem with hidden tests, a realistic editor, and a human who can open the attempt.

Campus and lateral hiring should not share a default paper. The same platform can run both.

What a coding stage needs

  • A prompt that states input, output, and constraints
  • Languages the role actually uses
  • Visible sample tests and hidden tests
  • A time limit the average target hire can finish
  • A way to re-run tests without leaving the attempt
  • A report an interviewer can read in two minutes

Edgeryt Hire coding exercises sit inside a broader assessment that can also include multiple-choice and written questions. That matters: many engineering roles need an explanation of the approach, not only a green test suite.

Candidates should see the problem, an editor, and test results in one workspace.

Campus coding vs lateral coding

Campus. Favour a small set of well-specified problems, shared across colleges, with auto-scored tests. Volume is the constraint. Pair with an aptitude or CS fundamentals section if the role needs it. See campus hiring drives.

Lateral. Favour problems closer to production: debugging, API-shaped functions, SQL, or a short project/file submission. Hidden tests still help, but reviewers should read code, not only the mark.

Do not use an identical cut-off. A new graduate missing an edge case is not the same event as a five-year engineer failing a warm-up.

How Edgeryt Hire supports this

You can create coding questions, import them from Excel/CSV, or start from the question library. Assessments can be multi-stage, with progression after review. Coding is a desktop format; do not promise a phone coding round you cannot deliver.

Question images in published assessments use stored object keys, not pasted screenshots. Import first, validate, then publish.

Design rules that keep the paper fair

  • Prefer one medium problem over five trivia snippets.
  • State whether extra print debugging is allowed.
  • Keep time visible.
  • Decide whether candidates can go back.
  • Calibrate on current engineers and on a recent intern before you send it to 30 colleges.

Adjacent area: integrity

Remote coding is easy to outsource if identity is weak. Configure monitoring for the risk of the round and review flags next to the code. See online proctoring for hiring.

Questions teams ask

Which languages should we enable?

Enable the ones you will interview in. Extra languages add support load without adding signal.

Should we show hidden test results?

Showing that hidden tests failed (without fixtures) is often enough. Dumping fixtures teaches the next Telegram group.

Can colleges run the same coding paper for placement mocks?

Institutions use Edgeryt Campus with faculty banks and student rosters. Employers assessing applicants use Hire. Do not share login workspaces across those jobs.
